FREE Manual Bookkeeping Checklist

Enter your email to received a free bookkeeping checklist, which has been designed for self-employed individuals with no separate business bank account who are keeping manual or spreadsheet records on a cash basis.

Cash basis accounting is the standard way to record your income and expenses if you’re a sole trader. It means you only record income when you receive it and expenses when you pay them.

Manual bookkeeping includes handwritten records and simple lists of income and expenses kept in a Word document or spreadsheet.

Manual bookkeeping records are only suitable for individuals with total combined self-employed and rental income of less than £50,000* before deducting expenses and tax. [*This limit reduces to £30,000 from 6 April 2027 and £20,000 from 6 April 2028.]

WARNING: Manual record-keeping is not compatible with HMRC's new Making Tax Digital for Income Tax system.
